IEC 60309-1:2021 Plugs, fixed or portable socket-outlets and appliance inlets for industrial purposes – Part 1: General requirements

The standard IEC 60309-1:2021 applies to plugs, fixed or portable socket-outlets and appliance inlets with a rated operating voltage not exceeding 1,000 V DC or 1,000 V AC, a frequency not exceeding 500 Hz and a rated current not exceeding 800 A, which are mainly used in industrial occasions both indoors and outdoors. This fifth edition supersedes the fourth edition in 1999, Amendment 1 in 2005 and Amendment 2 in 2012, bringing in technical revisions.

The significant technical changes in this edition of the standard include the addition of classification, requirements and tests for accessories with shutters; additional marking to indicate neutral terminal and/or earthing terminal; and the replacement of the term “connector” with “portable socket – outlet”. It also sets out requirements in aspects like the design and manufacturing of plugs and socket-outlets, electrical safety, environmental adaptability, mechanical strength, interchangeability, as well as marking and instructions, aiming to ensure the quality and safety performance of industrial plugs and socket-outlets.
