Waterproof is the ability of any material to resist water and moisture. To be classified as waterproof, the material should have a
• Hydrostatic head
• Waterproof test
• Rating of at least 1500 mm
The hydrostatic head test denotes the waterproof level of a fabric coating. In this test, a section of fabric is pulled tight and sealed in the chamber. Water is then added, and the fabric is observed to see how much it can withstand before droplets seep through. In addition, a rating of 5000-15000 mm is suitable for any weather condition.
This test means you can drop the object or the unit in the water up to a meter deep for half an hour. What is an ip67 rating? IP67 rating is defined as an electrical enclosure rating that signifies that an enclosure protects the device inside from the harmful effects of water and dust.
This test protects the immersion of anything in the water up to 1 mm. The duration of this test is at least 30 minutes. During this test, immersion at a depth of at least 1 m is measured from the bottom of the object and at least 15 cm measured from the top of the object. LISUN’s waterproof test chamber is considered best for checking the waterproof ability of any object.
Water-resistance is defined as the ability of the fabric to repel water from its surface. A high resistance level keeps the warm water out of the jacket and prevents your body from losing the temperature.
Water-resistance doesn’t always happen with water. However, it can happen to the objects that move through any fluid. Water resistance happens because of the particles present in water or the fluid. As the object moves through, a collision occurs between the particles and water.
Multiple factors affect this force. A few of them are listed below.
• Objects with different shapes have different levels of water resistance. For example, streamlined shapes have less resistance. Therefore they move through water at ease. If an object is turned sideways, it can be easily pushed through the water. This is the reason that fishes are shaped the way they are.
• The area also affects the water resistance. An object with a larger area will collide more with the water particles and therefore have a bigger drag force. Similarly, if you spread your body jumping into the water, you will encounter more water resistance.
• Velocity can affect this force as area affects. An object with a bigger velocity will have a stronger drag force. This is how fast the object initially travels through the water. The faster it goes, the stronger the drag force will be.
• The texture of the object is another important factor that affects the force.
• The density of the fluid it is moving through can also affect this force. Density is explained as how much matter is packed into a substance and how tightly packed the particles are. The more dense the water, the greater will be the drag force.
There are more than 38 water resistance test in the paper. We will go through a few of them in this article.
The time required for the color to appear on the paper surface is seen when it is floated on the standard ink.
This method is similar to the first one. Here, the sugar and the water-soluble dye are sprayed or sprinkled to be more precise on the paper’s surface. It is floated again, and the time required for the color change is noted.
Time is noted for the electrolyte to penetrate as measured by the electrical conductivity through the sample.
This test measures the water penetration by conducting electrolytes on paper.
These two tests use electrical conductivity as a measurement system to test the water resistance.
Amount of water absorbed in total immersion for a given time. Usually, the weight difference is seen as a technique to observe the water resistance.
The sample forms a side of a cell filled with water. Sometimes, lactic acid is also used. The user then sees the lactic acid penetration of an indicator.
The time required for the paper curve to touch the water on one side to reverse itself is seen. It is noted.
In this test, the time required for the drop of water to soak into the paper or board is noted.
The paper strip is immersed in the water, and the rise of the water through the capillaries is observed. Paper is a highly porous structure, and there are innumerable capillaries.
Measurement of increase in the thickness after a given time of immersion in water. This test sees the difference in the thickness of the paper when it is absorbed in the water, or the paper strip is immersed in the water. This paper strip is kept in the water, and the thickness increases with each passing minute.
It is a simple visual method where a stream or line is drawn on paper. The spreading of the ink and feathering of the ink is seen through the naked eyes.
When a sample of the paper is floated in thiocyanate solution, a drop of ferric chloride is placed on it. The reaction of both these components gives a red color. The time required for the appearance of the red color is noted.
Water-resistant jackets and pants usually possess a DWR (durable water repellent) finish on the exterior side. It repels the moisture and keeps you dry in the light rain or snow. The jacket usually features a waterproof breathable membrane, laminate, or comparable waterproof technology. In this case, it is usually considered waterproof.
Ingress Protection rating (or IP rating) is an international standard (IEC 60529). It is usually used to rate the degree of protection or sealing effectiveness in the electrical enclosures against the intrusion of objects, water, dust, or accidental contact.
