A salt spray test or salt fog test is a corrosion method for checking the corrosion resistance of the materials and coatings of the surface. The materials to be tested are usually stones, ceramics, and polymers. The surface of these materials is coated. This is done to provide them with a degree of corrosion resistance.
This procedure is an accelerated corrosion test because it produces a corrosive attack on the coated samples for the evaluation of the suitability of the coating. After some time, we evaluate the appearance of the corrosion products. The test duration is dependent on the corrosion resistance of the layer. If the coating is more corrosion-resistant, testing will take more time.
Test Purpose
This test evaluates the galvanized or pre-painted panel for its expected life on exposure to the marine conditions.
Test Methodology
The panel is subjected to continuous exposure to a 5% salt solution atmosphere under constant pressure and temperature.
The criterion for evaluation and acceptance
If the observed corrosion is less than the standards, it is considered ‘’PASS’’.
Tips
Proper maintenance of salt solution concentration, pH value and periodical observation are essential criteria, and scribe-making requires skills.
Modified Salt Spray Tests
ASTM G85 is the most popular test standard, covering the five modified salt spray tests. This standard refers to five tests as annexes from A1 to A5. These modified tests are carried out within a particular industrial sector to address the corrosion test capable of replicating the effects of naturally occurring corrosion tests.
1. ASTM G85 Annex A1 ( Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test)(non-cyclic)
We conduct this test to determine the relative resistance to the corrosion of chromium plating on the steel. This modified test also determines the resistance to the corrosion of zinc-based die casting on the exposure to the acetic acid at an elevated temperature.
2. ASTM G85 Annex A2 (Acidified Salt Fog Test )(cyclic)
This test is used for the determination of relative resistance to the corrosion of aluminium alloys on exposure to the changing climatic conditions of acetic acid salt spray. This climate change is usually caused by air-drying and humidity at an elevated temperature.
3. ASTM G85 Annex A3 (Seawater Acidified Test )(cyclic)
This test is conducted for the determination of relative resistance to the corrosion of uncoated or coated aluminium alloys and many other metals. This test is also called the MASTMAASIS test.
4. ASTM G85 Annex A4 (Salt spray test)(cyclic)
This test is used for the determination of relative resistance to the corrosion of product samples. These product samples encounter the combined SO2 salt/spray acid rain environment during the duration of their service.
5. ASTM G85 Annex A 5 (Salt spray test)(cyclic)
This test is used for testing the relative resistance to the corrosion of paints on the steel when steel is exposed to the changing climate of salt spray at an elevated temperature.
Applications
The reason for the popularity of this test is its rates (inexpensive), quick, good standards and repeatability. The test is getting popular because of its low costs and immediate results. Usually, the salt spray tests are used for maintaining the coating instead of predicting the corrosion resistance to the metals. For example, pre-treatment, painting, electroplating and galvanizing are such conditions.
Interestingly, pre-treated and painting components have to pass a 96 hours test of neutral salt spray for acceptance of the production. If the components don’t meet this requirement, they are considered unstable in the chemical processes. The main application of this test is that it establishes an accurate comparison between the actual and expected corrosion resistance.
Usually, the oxides take a particular time to appear on the sample surface. This test compares the time and determines whether the test passes or fails. In addition, this test also predicts how materials or surface coatings resist corrosion.
Salt Spray Chambers
Many engineers are surprised by how strong salt spray corrosion can be. Knowing your product’s long-term reaction to a corrosive environment might be disastrous, both for the product in use and for your company.
Long and short-term salt spray, salt fog testing, and steady-state and cycle tests are available. We can meet any test requirement, no matter how long or short, and our engineers are more than ready to discuss any additional test requirements you may have.
Salt Spray Test Chambers, also known as Salt Fog Test Chambers, are used for the evaluation of the corrosion resistance of metal parts, zinc-plated nuts and bolts. Coated samples are placed in such chambers and subjected to an artificial corrosion environment to determine how suitable the coating surface is for use as a protective finish on final products. Samples are tested for a predetermined time; the higher the corrosion resistance, the longer the test duration.
Benefits of a Salt Spray Chamber
• Large samples can be loaded and unloaded with ease.
• Microprocessor-based digital control
