LISUN SG61000-5 Surge Generator – After-sales Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Table of Contents

The SG61000-5 fully automatic surge generator (also called lightning surge immunity test, combination wave generator, surge current generator/surge voltage generator, combined surge voltage and current generator) .

How does a surge generator work?
The SG61000-5 surge generator provides a common basis for evaluating the resistance of power cords and internal connectors of different equipment to high energy transient interference caused by natural lightning surge induction and large capacity load switching. It fully meets the IEC 61000-4-5, EN61000-4-5 and GB/T17626.5 standards.

Q1: The surge generator can’t be powered on. (The fuse or MOV burn out when the surge generator is turned on)
Fuse at the power filter:

A1: The power input of the surge generator is unstable, the voltage is too high or other power supply problems may cause the fuse and MOV to burn out. Please try to use a stable power supply.

Q2: During the surge test, the main power of the laboratory will trip.
A2: It is important to connect the isolation transformer to the “Internal CDN input” on the back of the surge generator according to the rated power of the EUT. Without an isolation transformer may easily cause the power grid to trip.

Q3: The EUT is not on when you click “EUT Power” on the touch screen.
A3: After completing all wiring, please confirm that the output of the isolation transformer is turned on before performing the surge test. Please confirm that the switch of the “Internal CDN input” on the back of the surge generator is turned on.

Q4: The synchronous phase angle is set. But the surge test is not carried out according to the corresponding angle.
A4: The EUT is powered by AC power, and the EUT needs to be turned on during testing so that the surge generator can detect the EUT power waveform and run surge test according to the set phase angle.

Q5: How to set the impedance for surge test?
A5: This surge generator is a fully automatic surge tester, and there is no need to set the impedance value yourself. When doing a line-to-line surge test, the impedance value automatically switches to 2Ω. When doing a line-to-ground surge test, the impedance value automatically switches to 12Ω. If your surge generator contains a 500Ω impedance output, you can also find the corresponding interface directly on the front panel.

Q6: Why is the peak voltage lower than the set surge voltage during surge test?
A6: If the EUT is not connected, the peak voltage is basically equal to the set surge voltage. However, if a EUT is connected, part of the surge voltage will be absorbed by the EUT. So the peak voltage will be lower than the set surge voltage.

Q7: Laboratory power supply tripped when run a surge test with coupling direction to PE.
A7: Please confirm that the ground wire of the surge generator is well connected to the earth:

Q8: How to use a discharge tube to confirm whether there is a surge output.
A8: If for some reason, the test is abnormal, and you want to confirm whether the surge generator still has a surge output normally, the best way is to refer to the manual and use an oscilloscope to accurately view the surge output waveform. If you don’t have an oscilloscope, you can also use a discharge tube to simply confirm whether the surge is still output.
The accessories include a discharge tube, as shown below. Customers can also purchase the discharge tube by themselves:
LISUN SG61000-5 Surge Generator – After-sales Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)Simply connect the discharge tube to the surge generator as an EUT. During surge output, the discharge tube will light up. Otherwise, there is no surge output.

Q9: If the EUT is powered by DC, how to connect it?
A9: If the EUT is powered by DC, there is no need to use an isolation transformer, and the appropriate DC power supply can be directly connected to the L and N of the “Internal CDN Input” on the back of the instrument. Then the power cord of the EUT can be directly connected to L and N on the front panel of the instrument. Be careful not to connect the positive and negative poles of the front and rear connections incorrectly.

Q10: How to switch the waveform 1.2/50μs or 8/20μs for testing?
A10: Surge generator is a combined-waveforms instrument. It has voltage waveform 1.2/50μs (open circuit) and current waveform 8/20μs (short circuit) at the same time. And for IEC 61000-4-5 surge test, you need both waveforms at the same time, and it can’t be separated or switched between each other. If you need only one waveform, that will be another instrument.

Q11: How to switch the impedance to 2Ω, 12Ω or 500Ω for testing?
A11: If your surge device includes 2 Ω, 12 Ω, and 500 Ω impedances, you can see the 500Ω option on the front panel. Connect the EUT to the two terminals in the figure below, and the surge output impedance will be 500 Ω:

Surge generator with 500 ohm impedance

Surge generator with 500 ohm impedance

According to the standard, you need 2Ω when you do surge test between L and N lines, and you need 12Ω when you do surge test between lines and PE. The impendance will automatically change when you connect the EUT to  “CDN output” and you select the coupling direction on the touch screen.

Q12: If your EUT does not require power supply, how to connect it for testing?
A12: If the EUT sample is a diode or other sample that does not require power supply, for SG61000-5 series small surge generator: remove the U-shaped plug on the front panel of the instrument, and then connect the EUT to the “LSG-HV” and “COM” terminals, and then perform the surge test. Then the surge output impedance is 2Ω. See the figure below:

For SG61000-5H series big surge generator, change the “Built-in CDN” on touch screen  to “Source output”, then connect the EUT to the “Surge output” and “Surge com” terminals, and then perform the surge test. At this time, the surge output impedance is 2Ω. See the figure below:
