What does RoHS refer to and what are the RoHS test items

What does RoHS refer to?
RoHS stands for the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, which was legislated by the European Union and officially implemented on July 1, 2006. It is mainly used to regulate the material and process standards of electronic and electric products to make them more conducive to human health and environmental protection.

The purpose of the standard is to eliminate six substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (note: PBDE refers to polybrominated diphenyl ethers, not polybrominated biphenyls) in electronic and electrical products, and it also specifies that the content of cadmium does not exceed 0.01%.

ROHS certification is a compulsory certification mark of EU member states. Products exported to EU countries need to be ROHS certified. ROHS certification is very common. It is an environmental protection certification. ROHS certification is also a relatively wide range of certification. At present, China and EU member states have close trade cooperation. For enterprises cooperating with EU countries, it is more necessary to understand the relevant content of ROHS certification.

What product scope does RoHS certification involve?
1. Large Household Appliances: Large refrigerating equipment, freezers, refrigerators, other large food refrigeration, preservation and storage equipment; washing machines, clothes drying machines; dishwashers, cooking equipment, electric furnaces, electric hot plates, microwaves, other large cooking and food processing equipment; electric heating equipment, electric stoves; other large heating room, bed and sitting furniture; fans, air-conditioning devices, other blowing, ventilating and air conditioning equipment.

2. Small household appliances: Vacuum cleaners, carpet sweepers, other cleaningequipment; sewing, knitting, weaving and other textile processing equipment; irons and other irons, flat plates and other clothing care equipment, ovens, pan cookers, grinders, coffee machines and devices for opening or sealing containers or packages; electric knives, hairdressing, blow drying, brushing teeth, shaving and massage appliances; clocks, watches and other measuring, indicating or recording time devices; scale

3. Lighting equipment: Fluorescent tubes, excluding household fluorescent lamps; straight line fluorescent tubes; compact fluorescent tubes; high intensity discharge lamps, including sodium lamps and metal halide lamps; low pressure sodium lamps; other lighting devices or devices used for emitting or controlling light, excluding incandescent bulbs.

What are the RoHS test items?
The new directive on RoHS testing is 10 items, directive number (EU)2015/863.

For RoHS environmental certification there are two types of materials, metallic and non-
metallic materials:
For the non-metallic RoHS testing items there are Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg), Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs), DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP, making 10 items in total. For the metallic RoHS testing items there are Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Mercury (Hg) and Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+), making four items.

The other four substances are: Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), Benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP), Di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and Di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP). The maximum allowed concentration in non-exempted products is 0.1%.

What are the RoHS testing methods?
The initial method for RoHS Conformity testing is X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF). XRF analysis machines come in two form, standalone, desktop and handheld. Typically, a handheld XRF analyzer is used first for portable on-site XRF testing, and focusing on parts of the product where the risk of containing restricted substances is higher.

With the emergence of RoHS 3 and the four additional Phthalates, further testing is needed to determine the levels of these compounds which are extracted using solvents.

Then Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) or combined with Flame Ionization Detection (GC/FID) is used to analyze the extracted solvents for the presence of Phthalates. Other elements and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers/Styrene Elastomers are analyzed separately using comparison schemes and GCMS.

RoHS certification limit:
PBB and PBDE are flame retardants used in plastics. Hexavalent chromium is used for chrome plating, chromate coatings and primers, as well as chromates.

The maximum allowable concentration for non-exempted products is 0.1% or 1000 ppm (except for cadmium, whose limit is 0.01% or 100 ppm (by weight) and is limited per homogeneous material within the product, meaning the limit does not apply to the overall weight of the product or even of the components, but applies to any single material that can be (theoretically) mechanically separated, such as the sheath on a cable or a tin plating on a component leadwire.

RoHS Certification Considerations:
RoHS does not require any particular product labels, but many manufacturers have adopted their own compliance logos to reduce confusion. Visual indicators include a clear “meets RoHS standards” label, a green leaf, checkmark symbols, and a “no PB” logo. The “e” inside of a circle with an arrow, sometimes referred to as the China RoHS label, can also mean compliance.

RoHS 2 attempted to address this issue by requiring the use of a CE mark with the above logo, with its use being regulated by trading standards enforcement bodies. [27] It points out that the only allowable indication of RoHS compliance is the CE mark. [28] Closely related to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) made law at the same time as RoHS, is a Waste Bin logo featuring an “X”, and usually accompanied by the CE mark.

RoHS Compliance Testing:
•
RoHS testing of electronic appliances
• Alloy manufacturing RoHS test
• RoHS testing of coating and plating
• RoHS testing of plastics and plastic parts
• Various hazardous element testing area
