What is an ESD test generator used for

The ESD test generator is mainly used to simulate the static electricity on the human body. The main function is to generate a certain amount of static electricity to see whether electronic related products can maintain normal operation under the action of static electricity.

Then why do we do such a simulation esd test? Mainly because ESD test will cause certain harm to electronic components or products. Let’s take a look at what are the main hazards?
1. Cause malfunction or malfunction of electronic equipment;
2. Break down integrated circuits and precision electronic components, or promote the aging of components, which reduces the yield of production;

The breakdown and damage of components caused by esd test generator is the most common and most serious electrostatic hazard in the electronics industry. It is divided into hard breakdown and soft breakdown. Hard breakdown is a one-time cause of dielectric breakdown, burnout, or indirect failure of a component; while soft breakdown is caused by deterioration of the device’s performance or a decrease in parameter indexes.

Friction electrification and human body static electricity are the two major hazards in the electronics and microelectronics industries, but the generation of static electricity is not the hazard; the real hazard is the accumulation of static electricity and the resulting electrostatic discharge, so anti-static measures must be taken control.

The esd test mainly examines the discharge (direct discharge) caused by people or objects in contact with the equipment, and the impact on the operation of the equipment when people or objects discharge (indirect discharge) from nearby objects. ESD test generator can generate 1-50A discharge current within 0.5-20ns. Although the current is large, the energy is small due to the short duration. Generally, esd test generator will not cause harm to people, but it may cause destructive harm to electronic products such as integrated circuit chips.
