What is IEC ball pressure test

IEC ball pressure test is a special kind of Potting test, which is used to test the insulation resistance and shell protection insulation strength of the switch device under certain conditions. This test is conducted according to IEC 61043-4-2 standard. This standard is only applicable to single-phase devices.

The main purpose of IEC ball pressure test is to test the accuracy of measurement and mechanical strength of protection insulation of the product. It leads the prepared test current uniformly to the installation surface of the product and keeps the current for a certain period of time. In IEC standards, the test time and test current are defined.

Certain preparation is needed to carry out the IEC ball pressure test. Firstly, the tested switch device must be installed according to the specified installation size. The fixture is composed of steel tube, groove steel and installation bolts, etc., which are used to reliably support and fix the tested device. Before installing the fixture, its locking bolts must be checked to ensure reliability. After installation is completed, a detailed inspection of the test system can be carried out. In addition, the ground (“ball pad”) used for testing must be electrostatic sensitive, uncontaminated and dry to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test.

Before carrying out the IEC ball pressure test, a complete inspection report should be prepared in advance according to the standard, which should record all the information in detail, including the specification parameters, measurement parameters and test results of the tested device.

In the process of testing, the insulation resistance of the tested device should be measured. When testing, the high-voltage side and low-voltage side should be isolated first, then the connecting line should be firmly connected to the fixture, and the circuit should be disconnected after the measurement is finished. Finally, the qualification should be determined and recorded in time according to the test results.

If the results of the IEC ball pressure test meet the standard requirements, effective protection can be obtained before the product is put into the market. IEC ball pressure test not only tests the protection insulation strength of the product, but also detects any defects in the product structure, thus ensuring its service life and safety in normal working environment.

IEC ball pressure test sample requirements
IEC 60695-10-2:2014 requires that the thickness of the test sample be not less than 2.5mm, the size of the test sample shall be a square with side length not less than 10mm or a circle with diameter not less than 10mm, and the thickness shall be (3.0±0.5) mm. The test sample can be cut off from the area near the parallel upper and lower surfaces of the product, or a sample of the same material as the test sample can be used instead. The test sample surface should be flat.

IEC ball pressure test method
The test sample and device are placed in an oven at the specified temperature, after the specified time, the pressure ball is removed, the sample is placed at 20 ± 5 °C in 10s, placed in 6min ± 2min, water stain is removed, and the size of the indentation diameter is measured in 3min.

If the size of the indentation diameter is not more than 2.0mm, the test result is passed.
