The International Commission on illumination (CIE) is used to measure the psychological parameters of the subjective response of the light emitted by the lighting device in the indoor visual environment to the discomfort of the human eye.
Glare is defined as a visual phenomenon that causes discomfort or reduces the ability to observe details or targets due to inappropriate brightness distribution or brightness range in the field of vision, or extreme contrast. Generally, glare is what people often call “dazzling”. It will make people feel dazzling, cause eyes to ache and weep, or reduce their eyesight, and even lose their eyesight ability because they can’t adapt to light and shade.
The light source of glare is divided into direct, such as sunlight, too strong light, etc., and indirect, such as the reflection from the smooth object surface (highway pavement or water surface, etc.) According to the consequences of glare, it can be divided into three types: discomfort glare, light adaptation glare and disability glare. Different kinds of glare will cause different negative results:
1. Discomfort glare refers to the discomfort felt in some too bright environments, such as reading in the strong sunlight or watching high brightness TV in a dark house. When the field of vision of human eyes must be switched between each other in an environment with a large difference in brightness, they will feel uncomfortable. This uncomfortable condition will cause an escape action of the eye and reduce vision At the same time, people’s visual ability will decline, resulting in unsafe hidden dangers.
2. Another kind of glare is called light adaptive glare, which refers to a phenomenon that binocular vision declines when people walk into the sun from a dark cinema (or underground tunnel) The main reason is that the strong glare source forms a central dark spot on the retina of the human eye, causing long-term blurred vision.
3. Incapacitated glare refers to a phenomenon that the contrast of human retinal image decreases due to the messy glare sources around, which leads to the difficulty of image analysis by the brain. It is similar to the performance that the projection of slide projector on the wall is interfered by the strong light nearby, which leads to the decline of image quality.
The general causes of glare can be summarized as follows:
1. Brightness of light source (the higher the brightness is, the more obvious the glare is)
2. Position of light source (the closer to the line of sight, the more obvious the glare)
3. Appearance size and quantity of light sources (the larger the apparent area is, the more the number of light sources is, the more obvious the glare is)
4. Surrounding environment (the darker the ambient brightness is, the lower the eye adaptation brightness is, and the more significant the glare is)
