IEC 60529:2013 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)

IEC 60529:2013 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It is applicable to the classification of degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment with a rated voltage not exceeding 72.5 kV. This standard aims to ensure the safety and functionality of electrical equipment by specifying the protection levels against external factors such as dust, water, and other environmental hazards.

The standard uses the “IP code” to classify the degrees of protection. The IP code consists of the letters “IP” followed by two digits. The first digit represents the level of protection against solid objects, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 6 (completely dust – tight). The second digit represents the level of protection against water, ranging from 0 (no protection) to 8 (suitable for continuous immersion in water under specified conditions). By understanding the IP code, manufacturers, consumers, and regulatory bodies can assess the suitability of an enclosure for specific environments and ensure the equipment’s reliability and safety.
