IEC 61058-1:2016 Switches for appliances – Part 1: General requirements

Scope

The standard IEC 61058-1:2016, titled “Switches for appliances – Part 1: General requirements”, mainly deals with the switches used to control electrical appliances and other equipment for household or similar purposes, with a rated voltage not exceeding 480 V and a rated current not exceeding 63 A.

The standard covers various aspects. It classifies switches into different types like isolated and non – isolated, AC and DC switches. It sets out design requirements including mechanical, electrical, insulation and temperature control designs. The manufacturing process must adhere to certain technological requirements, and the products need to undergo a series of tests like functional, safety and environmental adaptability tests before leaving the factory. In addition, clear safety markings and instructions are required for correct user operation and to avoid safety risks. The standard also mentions other requirements regarding maintenance, repair and recycling.
